I haven't read this book, however this interview on NPR is very interesting: Passion on Display in 'Who Are You People?'
The book is about the supposed "death" of community, and how it is actually thriving in niches. The book is about people who obsessively explore certain activities. For example collecting Barbie dolls is, for many, a passion. What happens, however, when people follow a passion is they tend to connect with other people who are also following that passion. Any time you have a group of people join together for common activities, there is a community being formed.
